Our patients cannot talk to us, so tests are a crucial part of clinical evaluation.
Our Laboratory:
In house testing with the latest equipment from Idexx provides rapid, accurate and affordable blood tests. This means the comprehensive blood analysis-laser cyte, hematology, chemistry, electrolytes, urinalysis, thyroid, cortisol and even pancreatic specific tests-are available within the hour. Emergency cases can be dealt with expeditiously and medical or anesthetic and surgical therapies can employed instantly.
Central Laboratory for Veterinarians (CVL):
A group of BC and Alberta veterinarians established the first private veterinary laboratory in Canada in the 1980’s. From its first years in an old house in Cloverdale, through to the construction of laboratories in Langley, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, CVL has grown both in size and international reputation. Currently Central Lab facilities are the only private veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Canada to receive ISO 17025 certification for any test procedures.
Samples from your pets are sent to one of several areas within the lab: Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Radioimmunoassay, Chemiluminescence’s, Serology, Histology or Bacteriology. In each, there is sophisticated equipment and highly skilled staff to undertake the requested tests. Results are available within 12 – 24 hours,
depending on the test needing to be done.
Radiology (X-Rays):
In house radiology is available at all times and provides us with valuable information for hard tissue imaging.
Electrocardiography (Computerized ECG):

ECG’s offer a non-invasive way of assessing the size of the heart chambers, the rate of the heart and its electrical rhythm (the timing mechanism). Additionally, it provides information suggestive of some electrolyte and hormonal imbalances, myocardial (heart muscle) damage, etc.
Endoscopy:
The use of fiber optic endoscopes permits direct availability of the interior of various parts of the body. Endoscopes vary in their purposes and degree of sophistication. Currently, our equipment permits us to view nasal chambers, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, esophagus, stomach and colon.
Additionally, Dr Eugene Gorodetsky provides a specialist endoscopic service that enlarges the scope of the endoscopy to foreign body retrieval and biopsy sampling.
Ultrasound and other imaging:
Ultrasonography of the thoracic and abdominal cavities of pets is
available at Terra Nova Village Veterinarian through the board certified
services of Dr. P. Dhillon of Mobile Imaging Services
Ultrasound imaging provides an extremely valuable and noninvasive tool for imaging the soft tissues of animals.
Alternatively, cases may be referred to Canada West Veterinary Specialists for ultrasound evaluation or for CAT scans.
More information regarding MRIs in veterinary medicine will be posted in the future. For further information about Dr. P. Dhillon's services please visit his website:
